Aunque inicialmente planeó dedicarse a la biología marina, Michelle se interesó en las ciencias físicas después de tomar su primera clase de oceanografía en la Universidad de Hawai en Hilo. Luego completó un proyecto de tesis de geología marina y se graduó con su Licenciatura en Ciencias en 2011. En 2012, Michelle se matriculó en la Facultad de Ciencias Marinas de la Universidad del Sur de Florida como estudiante de oceanografía geológica. Obtuvo su maestría en 2015.

Although she initially planned to pursue marine biology, Michelle became interested in the physical sciences after taking her first oceanography class at the University of Hawaii at Hilo. She went on to complete a marine geology thesis project and graduated with her Bachelor’s of Science in 2011. In 2012, Michelle enrolled at the University of South Florida, College of Marine Science as a geological oceanography student. She obtained her Master’s degree in 2015. Today, Michelle is pursuing her Ph.D. in Marine Science at the University of South Florida, College of Marine Science. Her research focuses on understanding how ocean warmth influenced East Antarctica Ice Shelf evolution over the past million years. To do this, Michelle investigates the geochemical signatures preserved in sediment cores. This work is important for understanding Antarctica’s past contribution to global sea level, and for predicting future sea level rise as Earth’s climate changes.
